Use Repair PDF when a file has structural problems. Our controlled example has an incorrect cross-reference pointer; the tool exports a readable four-page copy.
Keep the original and choose the damaged file
Open the tool and choose your PDF. A preview may still work when a reader can recover the object structure. If the file cannot be opened at all, the tool may not be able to repair it.
Run the repair attempt
Choose Start. The tool attempts to read recoverable content and writes a new PDF. The example’s four pages are recovered from the file with the altered cross-reference pointer.
Review the result carefully
Download and open the result in your normal reader. Check page count, text, images and any bookmarks or form fields you need. Do not rely only on the first page.
If important content is absent or the output fails to open, return to a known good backup or request another source copy.
Common questions
Why does the damaged input still have a preview?
Some readers can locate page objects even when structural references are wrong. A visible preview does not mean every PDF reader will accept the file.
Can repair recover a forgotten password?
No. Password access and structural repair are different tasks. Use Unlock PDF with the required password for a file you are authorized to access.
