Convert color PDF pages to grayscale for monochrome reading or printing. Colors become shades of gray, while ordinary PDF text and vector shapes stay native instead of turning every page into an image. Grayscale includes intermediate tones, not only black and white. Printer drivers decide how ink is used, so check the print settings and review a sample page.

Gray tones and native PDF content
Choose all pages or a page range and convert the selected content to grayscale. This is a PDF color-space conversion rather than a deliberate full-page screenshot export, so supported text and vectors can remain native. Different colors with similar brightness can become difficult to distinguish; review charts, legends and highlighted text.
Choose the pages you need
Process the whole document or enter specific page numbers and ranges.
Page ranges and numbering
Use PDF positions, starting at 1, rather than numbers printed on the page. A list such as 1, 3-5 includes four pages. A blank range uses every page. Check the preview when the document includes a cover or differently numbered chapters. Only the chosen pages are included in this conversion.
Review before monochrome printing
Grayscale is not the same as a two-color black-and-white threshold.
Grayscale, contrast and printing
The result can contain many gray shades. Very light elements can print faintly and colored indicators can lose their distinction. Printer settings still affect the final paper output. If you need stronger separation between light and dark scanned content, Contrast PDF offers brightness and contrast controls.
Review your finished PDF
Preview the result before downloading and sharing it.
Preview, download and revise
Select Start when the settings are ready. On the result screen, Preview opens the generated PDF and Download saves a separate copy. Back returns to the current workspace; Start over clears it for a new file. Review small text, page edges and page order in the finished copy. A new PDF does not preserve the validity of an existing digital signature.

Open one PDF up to 100 MB and 750 source pages. Protected files need an unlocked copy unless this tool explicitly offers password entry. Large or complex pages can require more memory or reach processing limits even when the file is within these limits.
Processing uses our servers. Source files, temporary files and results are deleted from our servers within 30 minutes after processing finishes. We do not share document contents with third parties or use them to train AI models.

Server processingIs grayscale PDF the same as pure black-and-white PDF?
Grayscale includes intermediate gray tones, so it is not a two-color threshold conversion. This tool changes PDF colors while preserving ordinary text and vector content. Ink usage still depends on your printer and its settings.
